This caused significant controversy because it demonstrated that technically, seed phrase data can leave the device. Ledger clarified that this requires explicit consent, firmware updates, and identity verification — but the controversy revealed that the architecture allows it in theory.
Our view: Ledger Recover is an optional feature that you don't have to use. If you properly back up your seed phrase (as you should), you will never need it and it poses no risk to you. The fundamental security of the device for standard use has not changed.
If you're concerned: Never enable Ledger Recover. Back up your seed phrase on paper (and optionally on a metal plate). Store it in a secure offline location. As long as you follow basic seed phrase security, the Recover feature is irrelevant to your security posture.
