Crypto Guide for Ukrainians in Europe 2026

Over 6 million Ukrainians now live across Europe — 4.4 million under Temporary Protection status in the EU. They send $12.6 billion home every year, often to family members under bombing, internally displaced, or in occupied territories. Traditional banking is slow, expensive, and sometimes impossible. This is the complete guide to using crypto safely — how to buy, send home, avoid scams, and handle taxes.

I'm Libor, a Czech crypto investor since 2021 — I saw firsthand how refugees from Ukraine in my country struggled with remittance costs in 2022, and this guide is my attempt to give back.
⚠️ Binance is not available to new EEA customers: after withdrawing its MiCA licence application in Greece, Binance suspended most services for EU residents on July 1, 2026 — no new sign-ups, deposits or orders (withdrawals still work) — while it seeks authorisation in France. If you live in the European Economic Area, use a MiCA-licensed exchange such as Kraken or Bitvavo. Outside Europe, Binance remains an option. Which exchanges are MiCA-licensed?

Your Legal Status Matters — Temporary Protection Until March 2027

Good news first: the EU has extended Temporary Protection (TP) for Ukrainians until 4 March 2027. As of 31 January 2026, Eurostat records 4.38 million non-EU citizens under TP in the EU — and 98.4% are Ukrainian. Adult women make up 43.5%, minors 30.3%, and adult men the rest.

TP is not asylum. It's a faster, simpler status that gives you:

What this means for crypto: Your TP card IS a valid residency document for opening crypto accounts on any MiCA-licensed EU exchange. You don't need a "permanent" residency or citizenship. Bitvavo, Kraken and Coinmate all accept TP documents. You DO need a local EU bank account, which almost every TP holder has opened by now.

According to UNHCR (February 2026), 5.9 million Ukrainian refugees are recorded globally, with 90% of them in Europe. The largest hosts are Germany (1.2M), Poland (1M), and Czech Republic (0.4M), followed by UK, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Remittances to Ukraine reached approximately $12.6 billion in 2024 — a 16% decrease from $15 billion in 2023, partly because more families have now relocated to Europe (no need to send home) and partly because banking restrictions cut some formal channels.

Not all refugees can send money home — they need jobs first. Latest OECD data shows these EU countries have the highest Ukrainian refugee employment rates:

Why Crypto? Banks Don't Work Well for Ukraine in 2026

If you've tried sending money to family in Ukraine since the war started, you know the problems. Let me list them so you know this isn't just crypto enthusiasm — there are real reasons banking fails for this corridor:

Problems with traditional remittance to Ukraine in 2026:

How stablecoins solve these:

MethodFee (€100 sent)SpeedFrontline accessible?
SWIFT bank transfer€15-252-5 daysSometimes
Western Union (cash)€8-12MinutesOnly major cities
Wise / Revolut€1-3Hours-1 dayRequires UA bank
USDC stablecoin (crypto)€0.50-2 incl. exchange fees5-10 minYes, even with phone only

Stablecoins have one killer advantage for Ukraine: your family needs only a smartphone with internet. No bank branch. No physical cash pickup. They can access it even if their home bank is closed. From the EU, use USDC: licensed EU exchanges no longer sell USDT under MiCA (why).

#4 — Coinmate (For Ukrainians in Czech Republic)

If you're one of the 400,000 Ukrainians in Czechia, Coinmate gives you direct CZK/BTC trading without currency conversion:

How to Send Money to Family in Ukraine (6 Steps)

The route below works from any EU country and uses USDC, a MiCA-compliant dollar stablecoin. (Licensed EU exchanges stopped selling USDT under MiCA — your family can still convert USDC to USDT or hryvnia on their side if they prefer.)

Step 1: Open and verify your Bitvavo or Kraken account

Your Temporary Protection document (or residence permit) plus your passport is enough for KYC. Verification usually takes minutes. Open Bitvavo · Open Kraken

Step 2: Deposit EUR from your EU bank

Send a SEPA transfer from your bank in Germany, Poland, Czechia or elsewhere. It is free on Bitvavo and Kraken and usually arrives within one business day.

Step 3: Buy USDC

Step 4: Your family in Ukraine opens an exchange account

Your family needs an exchange that accepts USDC deposits and pays out hryvnia. Options used in Ukraine:

They open the USDC deposit page, choose a network, and send you that exact address and the network name via a secure messenger (Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram).

Step 5: Send USDC on the network your family chose

Step 6: Family converts to UAH

Your family sells USDC for hryvnia on their exchange and withdraws to PrivatBank or Monobank, usually within 10–30 minutes. Typical cost on their side: 0.1–0.5%.

⚠️ First time? Send €10 as test. Never send the full amount on the first transfer. Send €10 first, confirm family received it, then send the main amount. Crypto sent to a wrong address or on a wrong network is unrecoverable.

🛡️ SAFETY — Scams Targeting Ukrainian Refugees

This is the most important section. Since 2022, scammers have specifically targeted Ukrainian refugees — they know you're vulnerable, far from home, and emotionally stressed. Read this carefully. Better yet, share it with family.

Here are the 5 most common crypto scams I've personally seen targeting Ukrainian refugees in Central Europe:

🚨 "Ukrainian Relief Fund" donations

Someone (often via Telegram, Facebook, Twitter) asks for crypto donations to "help Ukraine." They show fake official logos. Real Ukrainian government aid goes through verified channels only (Ministry of Digital Transformation official Twitter, United24). Never send crypto to unknown wallets.

🚨 Fake "Investment Opportunities"

"Ukrainian refugee support fund — deposit USDT and earn 3% daily." This is always a scam. No legitimate crypto investment pays fixed daily returns. It's a Ponzi — the first few people get paid with later victims' money.

🚨 Fake Exchange Websites

Scammers create sites like "bitvavo-ua.com" or "binance-help.com" that look real but steal your login. ALWAYS type URL manually or use bookmarks. Download apps only from App Store or Google Play.

🚨 "Help With KYC" Scams

Someone on Telegram/Facebook offers to "help you verify KYC for free." They ask for your passport photo + selfie, then use it to open accounts in your name. Never send your ID to unknown people.

🚨 Seed Phrase Requests

"Customer support" contacts you saying your wallet has an issue and asks for your seed phrase or private keys to "fix it." NO LEGITIMATE EXCHANGE EVER asks for seed phrase. If anyone asks, it's 100% a scam.

🚨 "Instant Cash Exchange" Networks

Pseudo-banks or OTC traders in Germany/Poland/Czechia offering to exchange USDT for cash with "no KYC." Often they take your USDT and disappear. Always use registered exchanges, even if slower.

Universal safety rules:
  • Never share private keys or seed phrases with ANYONE — not even family
  • Never send crypto to wallets shared in public groups or DMs by unknown people
  • Enable 2FA on every exchange account (use Google Authenticator, NOT SMS)
  • Use a password manager — never reuse passwords
  • Bookmark official exchange URLs — never click Google ads
  • If unsure about anything, ASK in established communities (r/CryptoCurrency, official exchange Discord) before acting

Tax Rules — EU and Ukraine in 2026

Disclaimer: I'm not a tax advisor. This is a simplified overview. Always consult a qualified tax advisor in your country of EU residence for your specific situation.

EU side — tax in your country of residence

Tax on crypto follows your country of residence, not your Ukrainian citizenship. Here's a summary for the top 6 hosting countries:

CountryCrypto tax rateTax-free conditions
🇩🇪 GermanyUp to 45% + Solidarity0% after 1-year hold
🇵🇱 Poland19% flatNo tax-free holding period
🇨🇿 Czech Republic15% up to ~CZK 1.7M, 23% aboveTax-free after 3-year hold
🇬🇧 UK10-20% CGT£3,000 annual allowance
🇮🇹 Italy26% flatFirst €2,000 annual tax-free
🇪🇸 Spain19-26% progressiveNo tax-free period

Important: Most EU countries tax crypto-to-crypto trades (e.g. BTC→ETH is a taxable event), not just crypto-to-fiat. Keep records. Use Koinly or CoinLedger to automate tax reports.

Ukraine side — what if I return?

Ukraine is in a complex situation regarding crypto taxation. Currently:

Starting a Business with Crypto as a TP Holder

Many Ukrainian refugees are highly educated professionals (IT, medicine, engineering). Some want to start their own business in EU using crypto. Here's what's possible:

What you can do:

What you cannot easily do:

💡 IT freelancer tip: Many Ukrainian IT workers in Poland, Czech Republic, and Germany already work for US/UK clients and get paid in stablecoins. This is legal — ask for USDC, which you can convert on any MiCA-licensed exchange — but you must report income in your EU country of residence for tax purposes. A good tax advisor is essential — budget 300-500 EUR/year for proper accounting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use crypto to buy things in EU stores as a Ukrainian?

Some large retailers accept crypto directly (e.g., some Revolut Cards, Crypto.com Card allow you to spend). For most purchases, you'd convert stablecoins (USDC) to EUR on an exchange, then use your EU bank card. Direct crypto acceptance is still rare in 2026.

My family is in occupied territory. Can I still send them stablecoins?

Technically yes — stablecoin transfers only require an internet connection. However, they'll struggle to convert them to cash or UAH because Russian-occupied banks don't work with crypto exchanges. Options: Trust Wallet for them to hold USDT, then convert on next visit to Ukrainian-controlled territory. This is a painful reality for many families.

I don't have an EU bank account yet — can I still use crypto?

You'll need one eventually for SEPA deposits. Fastest options in 2026: Revolut (opens in minutes with TP), N26 (1-2 days), bunq (1 day). All accept TP documents for account opening. Once you have any EU bank, you can deposit to Bitvavo or other exchanges.

Is this legal under EU sanctions against Russia?

Yes, absolutely. Ukrainian citizens sending crypto to Ukraine is not affected by EU sanctions against Russia. Sanctions apply to Russian persons and entities on specific lists, not to Ukrainians. Your KYC as a Ukrainian on Bitvavo/Kraken/Binance is fully compliant.

Will my Ukrainian bank account be okay while I live in EU?

Likely yes for PrivatBank, Monobank, or similar. But Ukraine's NBU may freeze accounts that look inactive or "suspicious." Best practice: keep your UA bank account active with small regular transactions. Don't abandon it — you'll need it when you return.

What happens to my crypto if Temporary Protection ends in 2027?

Your crypto holdings are yours regardless of your legal status. Even if TP ends and you need to leave EU, you can: (1) transfer crypto to a hardware wallet you physically take with you, (2) keep holdings on EU exchange and access from anywhere, (3) gradually sell and move EUR before relocating. Crypto is portable — that's a major advantage over fiat bank accounts.

The Bottom Line

For the 4.4 million Ukrainians living under Temporary Protection in the EU, crypto isn't a luxury or speculation — it's a practical tool for staying connected with family back home. It's faster, cheaper, and more reliable than traditional remittance channels, especially for families near the frontline or in recently liberated areas.

My recommendation: Start with a Bitvavo account (lowest fees, TP-friendly). Deposit €50-100 as a test, buy USDC, send €10 to a family member's WhiteBIT account, confirm it works, then scale up to your normal monthly amount.

And please — protect yourself from scams. Share this article with your family, especially the safety section. Scammers specifically target Ukrainian refugees because they know people are stressed and vulnerable. Community awareness is our best defense.

Слава Україні 🇺🇦
